British riots show importance of managing migration
Australia can credit its overall success as a migrant nation on having got its immigration policy broadly right, and thereby avoiding an anti-immigration populist backlash.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has rightly promised to jail the anti-immigration rioters who have attacked police and damaged property, just as he helped to do as head of the Crown Prosecution Service when protests after the police shooting of a black drug dealer turned violent back in 2011.
The Starmer government is also canvassing a crackdown on social media platforms that helped fuel the riots rocking cities across England. The riots follow far-right activists spreading online misinformation about the stabbing to death of three children by an underage offender from a migrant background in the northern town of Southport.
